Providing office insurance is fortunately relatively straightforward for underwriters. Most major insurers are enthusiastic for this type of risk which creates a very competitive environment where the customer gains.
Indeed for many small offices, the insurer's minimum premium will allow for all the cover that is required. Minimum premiums range from £250 to £500 for the standard office, although start as low as £150 for the office at home.
Policies are rated on the value of the office contents, with computers and electronic equipment often attracting a higher charge. The essential sections of public and employers liability will be included as standard. Business interruption cover will normally be a paid for extra, although is just as important to offices as any other trade.
The standard office policy will only go so far however and a separate professional indemnity insurance may be necessary for some occupations. It is also important to realise that most office policies are designed for businesses that are entirely restricted to clerical activities. If the office is part of a larger business e.g. building contractors, it may be more cost effective to insure it under the main commercial combined policy.
Other considerations when insuring your office are:
* Computers - if you have a large value in computers, you may be able to obtain a better premium for them under an engineering contract.
* Computer breakdown - the loss of a server or other vital part of your computer system may be time consuming to replace. Meanwhile your business income will suffer, although this may be insured under an engineering business interruption policy.
* Legal expenses insurance - employment, taxation or contract disputes can quickly become very expensive if legal help is needed.
* Directors and Officers insurance - Directors and key decision makers may be sued directly in a personal capacity, by persons inside or outside the company.
* Personal Accident and Travel insurance - This may be seen as a perk by some, although will be essential if any of your staff are engaged in travelling large distances, especially overseas.
